What this unit teaches
The «may not» and the «can» in one move
Never leave a refusal standing on its own on the phone. Name the limit plainly — mag, not kan, because it is not your personal choice — and follow it in the same breath with something concrete you will actually do. What makes people angry is rarely the answer; it is the sense that nothing is moving.
The impersonal: it is not my decision
The passive you learned for the record earns its keep here in speech. Er wordt geen informatie verstrekt puts the rule in the sentence instead of you, which takes the conversation off your person — useful for anyone, and doubly useful when your accent already invites the suspicion that you simply did not understand the question.
Who is entitled to hear
Check the record before you speak, every time: the representative is a named role, not the relative who calls most often or who sounds most authoritative. With large families, agree one contact person and one daily call — otherwise the day shift tells one son something, the evening shift tells the other something else, and two days later a family is sitting opposite you convinced that you are lying.
3. De oplossing bieden: «Vraagt u uw vader om toestemming, dan bel ik u meteen.»From the text
