What this unit teaches

Talk to the patient, not to the escort

When a relative comes along, the conversation drifts to them within a minute — they speak faster, they are less tired, and for you they are easier to understand. Turn your chair, use the patient's name and ask them directly. If the escort needs their own conversation, arrange it separately and with the patient's permission.

Slower, not louder

A hearing aid amplifies everything, including your raised voice, and turns it into noise. Sit facing the person, in the light, one sentence at a time, and leave a pause for the answer. This is also the setting in which your accent costs the most, so ask early — «verstaat u mij goed zo?» — rather than discovering at the end that half the consultation did not land.

betuttelen: what it sounds like

The «we» of the care home and the diminutive at the end of a name are the two clearest markers of talking down to someone, and older Dutch people react to them instantly — often by going quiet rather than by objecting. u stays u at 87. This is one of the few places where your own language may actively mislead you: warmth expressed through diminutives reads here as loss of standing.
