What this unit teaches

Five words that decide everything

These five carry the whole legal weight of a protocol, and four of them look mild. Your language probably renders bij voorkeur and in principe with the same hedging word, which is exactly why they are the pair that gets people into trouble: both are checkable afterwards. Read the small words before the clinical content — that is where the obligation lives.

Deviating is allowed, staying silent is not

A protocol is not only there to protect the patient; it protects you. Following it and recording that you did puts you on solid ground. Departing from it for a stated reason, written down, puts you on solid ground too. Only an undocumented departure leaves you standing alone — and that is a language task as much as a clinical one, because the reason has to be written in Dutch, today, not remembered in a year.

bevoegd and bekwaam — two different questions

Dutch law separates being authorised from being able. For reserved procedures you need both, and you are expected to judge the second one about yourself, out loud. «Ik ben er niet bekwaam in, wil je meekijken?» is a professional sentence here, not an admission of weakness — and for a foreign nurse or doctor it is often the single most useful sentence of the first year.
