What this unit teaches

One long sentence on three connectors

Written Dutch chains events inside one sentence where speech would use three. These three connectors do almost all of that work, and each one starts a subordinate clause — so the verb goes to the end every time. Build them one at a time: write the three short sentences first, then join them.

Patiënte werd opgenomen wegens koorts,
waarbij een urineweginfectie werd vastgesteld,
waarna behandeling met antibiotica werd gestart,
waardoor de klachten binnen twee dagen afnamen.

Five headings and nothing in between

The GP reads this between two consultations, in about a minute, and searches by heading. Anything that does not answer one of the five belongs in the record, not in the letter — including most of what you personally found interesting. Writing less is the skill here, and it is harder in a foreign language than writing more.

The polite instruction

Wij verzoeken u sounds ceremonial when you translate it, and it is in fact a task with a deadline. Dutch written politeness does not soften the obligation, it packages it — and reading it as a mere suggestion is how referrals get dropped. Note the te-infinitive at the end: verzoeken, adviseren and vragen all take it.

Wij verzoeken u de bloeddruk over één week te controleren.
Wij stellen voor het antibioticum na zeven dagen te staken.
Gaarne uw controle van de nierfunctie over twee weken.
