What this unit teaches

Five steps, and the pause between three and four

Learn the five steps by heart, in Dutch, as fixed sentences. Under stress your grammar gets worse, and a memorised structure is the thing that stays upright when your vocabulary does not. The pause is a step in its own right: two seconds of nothing, and the patient will fill it themselves.

2. Ik heb helaas geen goed nieuws voor u.
3. De uitslag laat zien dat er kanker is.

4. Reageren op wat de patiënt zegt.

Words that must not be softened

A softened word does not spare the patient — it makes them translate while they are least able to. Say the direct word once, then explain around it. And keep treatable and curable apart out loud: the patient will remember exactly which one you said, and hearing the wrong one costs the trust of every conversation after this.

When they ask how long they have

«Nobody knows» is true and lands as a brush-off; a number is false precision the patient will hold you to. The three-move answer does both jobs: it takes the question seriously, it refuses to invent, and it hands back something solid. Note wél with the accent — it marks the contrast, and that is what unit 31 trains.
