What this unit teaches

toch · juist · wel — a position in one word

In your language you hold a position with your voice: volume, pitch, repetition. Dutch does it with these three small words, and a sentence without them sounds like agreement no matter how firmly you say it. toch keeps your position without a fight, juist points at exactly one thing, wel contradicts a statement that was just made. Say them with stress — this is the sound layer of this block.

Ik blijf er toch bij.
Juist dát punt bedoel ik.
Het klopt wél.

A refusal that is not about the person

Put the patient in the middle of the sentence and the conflict stops being between two people. Volgens mij plus a checkable fact is almost impossible to take as an insult, and it gives the other person a way to look again without losing face. Saying it takes more language than agreeing does — so learn these three sentences by heart before you need them.

1. Ik wil het even met je nakijken.
2. Volgens mij past de dosering niet bij het gewicht.
3. Ik blijf erbij: eerst samen kijken.

When to bring in a third person

Involving a senior is a procedural step, not a complaint, and phrasing it as a shared move — zullen wij — keeps it that way. Notice that stilleggen is available to everyone, including the most junior person in the room; whether the ward actually lives up to that is something you will learn about it within two weeks.

Zullen wij het even aan de dienstdoende voorleggen?
Ik wil dit met de senior nakijken voordat ik het geef.
Ik leg het even stil tot wij zeker zijn.
