Het multidisciplinair overlegThe multidisciplinary meeting
What this unit teaches
hoewel · terwijl · zodat
Three conjunctions that let you hold two things at once — and holding two things at once is what a team meeting is for. hoewel concedes, terwijl contrasts or runs in parallel, zodat states the result you are aiming at. All three send the verb to the end, exactly like omdat in unit 13.
Hij loopt goed, hoewel hij op de trap nog onzeker is.
Terwijl wij dat bespreken, kijkt de arts in het dossier.
Wachten tot maandag, zodat de thuiszorg geregeld is.How to get into the conversation
Dutch meetings do not hand out turns: you announce your topic in one short clause and then talk. Two apologies in front of your sentence cost you the opening. And a half sentence at the right moment is worth more than a whole one that arrives too late — nobody is waiting for you to finish composing it in your head.
Ik wil iets zeggen over mevrouw in kamer acht.
Mag ik daar even op terugkomen?
Ik begrijp het voorstel, maar …
Wat mij betreft …Disagreeing in three moves
Disagreement is expected here and is not rude — but bare disagreement is. Acknowledge the proposal, state your alternative with zou to keep it a proposal rather than a verdict, and give the reason with zodat or omdat. Three sentences, and the meeting moves instead of stalling.
1. Ik begrijp het voorstel.
2. Ik zou willen wachten tot maandag,
3. zodat de thuiszorg geregeld is.From the text
