What this unit teaches

Two columns for the same thing

For you the Latin column is free and the everyday column is the work — which is the opposite of how courses usually treat it. The patient will never say the right-hand word, and the notes will never say the left-hand one. You need both, in both directions.

benauwd — a word with two bottoms

benauwd means both short of breath and frightened, and patients use it for both without noticing. Never guess which one: ask. The same trap sits in doof (numb or deaf) and in uitslag (rash or test result).

Where it hurts — three ready shapes

Six body parts glue straight onto pijn and become one word — that compound is the form patients use first. The other two shapes you already know from unit 11; here they come back with everyday words instead of clinical ones.

Mijn been doet zeer.
