What this unit teaches
die and dat — the article decides
Which word you use is decided by the noun in front of it, not by meaning: de → die, het → dat, plural → die. That is one more reason the article belongs to the word from the day you learn it. And after die/dat the verb goes to the end, exactly as after omdat.
de pil die u 's ochtends neemt
het medicijn dat u krijgt
de tabletten die u meeneemtThree degrees of insistence
Dutch care is not paternalistic, so the default is the polite imperative or a question. Keep u moet for the things where there is genuinely no choice — finish the course, come back if there is fever. Use it for everything and patients stop hearing it.
Neemt u de tabletten in bij de maaltijd.
Wilt u de kuur afmaken?
U moet de kuur afmaken.Teach-back: let them say it
Asking Heeft u het begrepen? gets you ja every time, from everyone, in every language. Asking the patient to say the plan back in their own words is the only check that works — and it doubles as your own check that what you said was actually Dutch.
Wilt u in uw eigen woorden herhalen wat u thuis doet?
Rustig maar. Ik help u.From the text
