What this unit teaches

Open questions before closed ones

This is tactics, not grammar. Start with two or three open questions and let the patient talk; only then narrow down with yes/no questions. Ask closed questions first and you get the answers you expected, not the ones that are true — and in a foreign language the temptation to do exactly that is enormous, because closed questions are easier to understand.

How pain gets described

Four adjectives cover most of what patients say about pain, and they are all Germanic — nothing to guess from Latin. Note geleden: the period comes first, drie weken geleden, the opposite of your order.

Wat voor pijn is het?
zeurend · stekend · brandend · drukkend
Het straalt uit naar mijn rug.
Het is drie weken geleden begonnen.

Summarise and check back

Say back what you understood and ask klopt dat. It is good medicine everywhere, and in a language you are still learning it is a safety net: a misheard word gets corrected here, at the end of the history, instead of in the notes.

Ik vat het even samen.
U heeft sinds drie weken pijn, erger na het eten.
Klopt dat zo?
