omdat — the verb goes right to the end
After omdat, dat and als the verb leaves its normal spot and waits at the very end of the clause. Your language has nothing like this frame, so there is nothing to lean on — this is why the unit runs eight days instead of six. Say the second half of the sentence slowly until the verb lands last by itself.
Ik heb hem opgenomen omdat hij koorts heeft.

Both mean because and both are correct. want joins two normal sentences and changes nothing; omdat sends the verb to the end. want is your safety line: when the sentence is long and you are tired, use it and stay correct.

The whole als-clause counts as one single element in first position, so the main verb must come immediately after the comma: Als de pijn terugkomt, belt hij ons. This is the sentence you will say at every discharge, so drill this one shape.
