What this unit teaches

Two clauses with en and maar

en and maar simply glue two full sentences together and change nothing inside them. This is the only kind of long sentence you need for now — omdat and dat come in unit 13 and they do change the order.

Zij hoest en zij is duizelig.
Hij ademt snel, maar hij heeft geen pijn.
✗ Zij hoest en is zij duizelig.

Since when and how long

sinds takes a moment — sinds gisteren, sinds maandag. A stretch of time takes al: al drie dagen. Your language uses one word for both, and mixing them up is the most common answer to the most common question a patient is asked.

Sinds wanneer heeft u die pijn?  — Sinds gisteravond.
Hoe lang hoest u al?             — Al drie dagen.
✗ Ik heb pijn sinds drie dagen.  → Ik heb al drie dagen pijn.

Getting worse — worden

zijn describes how things are, worden describes the change. On a ward the change is the news: slechter geworden is the phrase that makes a doctor walk faster.

De pijn wordt erger.
Zij is slechter geworden.
Hij wordt beter.
✗ De pijn is erger geweest.
