Dutch cannot start a sentence with a new thing. Er holds the place: Er is een wond. If a place word comes first, er slides in behind the verb: Rechts is er een wond.

Er is een wond.
Er zijn twee wonden.
Er is geen bloed.
Rechts is er een wond.

Lying, standing, sitting — not just being

Where your language says is, Dutch says how the thing is positioned: people and long objects liggen, upright things staan, attached things zitten. Using is instead is understood but marks you as foreign in every single handover.

De patiënt ligt in bed.
De stoel staat naast het bed.
De pleister zit op de borst.
✗ De patiënt is in bed.

Saying where it hurts

Two patterns, and the body part cannot own the pain. Either the person has it — Ik heb pijn in mijn rug — or the body part does it: Mijn rug doet pijn. You will hear both from patients within one sentence of each other.

Ik heb pijn in mijn keel.       ← I have pain in …
Mijn rug doet pijn.             ← my back "does" pain
