What this unit teaches

Asking without agreeing

When an offer lands, the reflex in a second language is to nod — nodding needs no words. These four questions cost you nothing and change what you are agreeing to. None of them contains a demand, so none of them can be refused; they simply make the offer concrete, and a concrete offer is one you can actually judge.

zou in a negotiation

You met zou in unit 21 as a way of softening bad news; here it does commercial work. A request in the plain present sounds like a condition — ik wil twee scholingsdagen — and invites a yes or no. With zou it becomes a proposal, and a proposal invites a counter-proposal, which is where anything you actually get comes from.

Three lists before the conversation

Negotiating in a second language starts with knowing what you want, not with vocabulary. Write the three lists at home, the night before, in your own language — under pressure you will not invent the distinction, and the whole conversation turns on it. Note where the cheapest wins usually sit: not in salary, which is set by the CAO, but in induction, supervision and training days, which cost the employer far less than replacing you.
