What this unit teaches
't kofschip: -te or -de
Weak verbs are the easy half and they follow one rule with a silly mnemonic: if the stem ends in one of the consonants in 't kofschip, the ending is -te, otherwise -de. Learn the mnemonic, not the list — every Dutch schoolchild has it, and your colleagues will quote it at you.
Both mean when. toen is for a single moment in the past and nothing else; als covers the present, the future and repetition. Your language uses one word for all of it, so this is a choice you have to make consciously for about six months until it settles.
Which past tense goes where
The rule of thumb: talking is perfect, telling is imperfect. A conversation about what happened to you uses the perfect; a case presentation, a letter and any written story use the simple past. Two exceptions always take the simple past even in speech: zijn, hebben and the modals, and any background scene — it was busy, she had a fever.
«Ik ben gisteren gevallen.»
→ Patiënt vermeldt dat hij gisteren is gevallen.
«Mijn moeder is verward.»
→ Dochter geeft aan dat moeder verward is.From the text
