Your language uses one verb where Dutch uses two, and the difference decides what the other person does next. Ik versta u niet asks for volume and speed; Ik begrijp u niet asks for different words. Pick the wrong one and the patient repeats the same sentence louder, which helps nobody.

Indirect questions — verb to the end

Wrapping a question inside Kunt u mij vertellen … makes it softer and gives you thinking time, but the inside of the question then behaves like an omdat-clause: subject first, verb last. Yes/no questions lose their inversion and take of instead.

Waar woont u?              →  Kunt u mij vertellen waar u woont?
Klopt dat?                 →  Ik weet niet of dat klopt.
Hoe is uw achternaam?      →  Kunt u mij vertellen hoe uw achternaam is?

These five are not politeness, they are equipment. The conversation will break down — with your accent, sooner and more often — and the difference between panic and a working consultation is whether these come out without thinking. They are drilled as their own card type, separate from vocabulary.
