The four modal verbs

kunnen, moeten, willen, mogen — four verbs, one rule: the second verb goes to the end. Learn the four forms as a block, they carry half of everyday speech.

Adjective before a noun

The adjective takes -e almost always: de grote kamer, een grote kamer. The single exception is een + a het-word: een groot huis, with no -e.

er is / er zijn

Use er is / er zijn to say that something exists: Er is een tuin. Er zijn twee slaapkamers. It is the normal way to describe a house or a ward.

Er is een tuin.
Er zijn twee slaapkamers.

Er is geen tuin.
